ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bering Strait crossing

Imagine a big pool filled with water, and imagine two sides of the pool separated by a wall. This wall has a tiny hole in it, and if you put your hand through that hole, you can touch the hand of someone on the other side.

The Bering Strait is like that wall between two big land masses, Asia and North America. But instead of a tiny hole, it’s actually a very wide and deep passage of water that separates Russia and Alaska.

Now, a long time ago, people from Asia probably walked across a land bridge that used to connect these two land masses. This was because the water levels were much lower due to ice age. But now that bridge is gone and people need boats, planes, or swimwear to cross the Bering Strait.

So, some people have thought that it would be really cool to build a bridge or tunnel across the Bering Strait, so people can walk or drive from one continent to the other. This would be a super long bridge though, around 103km long, and very deep underwater.

It would be a huge project, and it’s not something that is going to happen soon, if ever. But just imagine how cool it would be to have a bridge connecting Asia and North America!
