Biltmore stick

A biltmore stick is a special tool that people use to measure the height of trees. It's like a really long stick that has little notches on it that help people figure out how tall a tree is.

Here's how it works:

Let's say you want to measure the height of a tree. First, you stand a certain distance away from the tree (usually 66 feet or 20 meters). Then, you hold the biltmore stick up in front of you so that one end is touching the ground and the top of the stick is pointing at the top of the tree.

The stick has little notches on it that correspond to different heights. These notches are marked with numbers that tell you how tall the tree is. So, for example, if the top of the tree lines up with the "50" notch on the stick, then you know that the tree is 50 feet (or 15 meters) tall.

People have been using biltmore sticks for a very long time, and they are still a popular tool for measuring trees today.
