ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Biofilm

Biofilm is like a big house made by a lot of tiny living things called bacteria. The bacteria stick together and build their little homes on surfaces, like your teeth or inside a pipe. They make this house out of a sticky substance they produce, which is like glue.

Now, just like in a real house, the bacteria have their own rooms and their own space to live in. They communicate with each other and share food and other resources. They even protect themselves from outsiders, like an army defending their castle!

What makes biofilm very tricky is that it protects the bacteria from being harmed by things like medicines, cleaning agents or even the body’s immune system. This makes it hard to get rid of the bacteria and can cause problems like infections or clogged pipes.

So, just like how you need to keep your house clean, we need to keep surfaces clean to prevent biofilm from forming and causing problems. We can do this by regularly cleaning surfaces and using special cleaning agents and treatments specifically made to get rid of biofilm.
