ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Biomolecular structure

Biomolecular structure is like building with tiny little blocks that make up living things. Just like how you use Lego blocks to make a house, cells use small building blocks called molecules to make up different parts of your body.

These molecules are made up of atoms, which is like the letters that make up a word. Each molecule is made up of different kinds of atoms, just like how a word is made up of different letters. And just like how different letters can make different words, different molecules can make up different parts of your body.

Now, imagine a tiny little machine that can look at these molecules really closely. This machine is called a microscope. It can see how the different atoms in a molecule are joined together, similar to how you can see how the different Lego blocks are connected to build a house. The way these atoms are joined together is called the biomolecular structure.

Scientists study biomolecular structure to understand how our body works. They want to know how different molecules fit together to create different systems in our body, such as our immune system or our digestive system. By understanding biomolecular structure, scientists can find new medicines to help treat diseases or come up with new ways to make food healthier.

So, the next time you see a Lego house, remember that just like how it was built using tiny blocks, your body is built using tiny molecules that are put together in a specific way to make all the amazing things it can do!
