ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Birmingham gauge

The Birmingham gauge is a way to measure the thickness of very thin things like sheets of metal or wire. It's like a ruler but instead of measuring length, it measures how thick things are.

Let's say you have a sheet of metal that's really thin. You can use the Birmingham gauge to find out how thick the sheet is. First, you take the gauge and place it on the sheet of metal. Then, you press down on the gauge so it touches the metal.

The gauge has little notches on it that are different sizes. These notches are labeled with numbers. The bigger the number, the thinner the metal. If the gauge fits in the notch labeled "24," then you know the metal is very thin. If it fits in the notch labeled "5," then you know the metal is thicker.

The Birmingham gauge is helpful because it means that people all around the world can measure the thickness of thin metals in the same way. This way, we can all understand how thick or thin something is, no matter where we are.
