Instead of adding the digits in the ones place first, and then the digits in the tens place, it can add them all at once. So it would start by adding the ones digits together, which would give you 5. But it would also add the tens digits together at the same time, which would give you 1.
This might not seem like a big deal for just two numbers, but when you have to add thousands or millions of numbers together, that's when bit-level parallelism can really speed things up. It's like having lots and lots of workers all adding numbers together at the same time, instead of just one worker doing everything in order.
