ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bootleg turn

Okay kiddo, so you know how when we're driving sometimes we need to turn left but there isn't a left turn lane or a traffic light to help us turn safely? That's when we need to do a "bootleg turn"!

Basically, we have to drive past the street we want to turn on and then make a U-turn in a safer spot like at a traffic light or at a U-turn lane. Then we can turn right onto the street we really wanted to turn left onto.

It's called a "bootleg" turn because it's like doing something sneaky or illegal, but really it's just a tricky driving maneuver that we need to be careful and patient with so we can stay safe on the road.
