ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bootleggers and Baptists

So imagine you're going to a party where there's going to be some yummy cake and ice cream. Your parents say that you can only have a little bit of cake because too much cake is bad for you.

Now imagine there are two kinds of people who also want to control how much cake you eat. The first is the bootlegger. Bootleggers are people who make illegal copies of things like music or movies and sell them for cheaper than the original. They don't really care about your health or well-being, they just want to make money. The bootlegger at the party might say that you should eat as much cake as you want because it's so delicious and you won't be able to get enough of it. But they don't really care if you end up getting sick from all the cake.

The second kind of person is the baptist. Baptists are people who believe in a certain set of rules or principles, usually based on religion. At the party, the baptist might say that you should only have a little piece of cake because it's not good for your body or your soul. They genuinely believe that too much cake is bad for you and they want to protect you from harm.

So even though the bootlegger and the baptist have very different motivations for wanting you to eat less cake, they can end up working together. The bootlegger might donate money to a group that promotes healthy eating, because if people eat less cake, they might be more likely to buy his illegal cake-related products. And the baptist might support laws that limit the amount of cake that can be sold, because he thinks it's the right thing to do. Together, the bootlegger and the baptist can create a powerful alliance that can affect what you eat and how much of it you can have.
