A borehole is like a giant straw that we put in the ground to get water or other resources like oil or minerals. It's just like when you use a straw to drink from a cup, but instead of a cup and a small straw, that's your borehole and the earth is like your cup. We put the borehole in the ground by drilling a long, skinny hole through the dirt and rock until we reach what we're looking for. And just like when you suck the drink up through your straw, we use a special pump to bring the water, oil, or minerals up out of the ground and use it for things we need like drinking, heating our homes, or making things like plastic. Boreholes can be really big or really small, depending on how much water we need or how deep we have to go to find what we're looking for. But always remember, just like with your drink, we have to be careful and not take too much so that we don't run out.
