A bow drill is like magic hand that creates heat and sparks from wood.
First, you need a bow which is like a mini fishing pole that is bent in a curve shape. You hold the bow firmly in one hand and in the other hand, you hold a stick that is skinny and long called a spindle.
Next, you need a wooden board or a flat rock as a base which is called a hearth. Place the hearth on the ground and hold it with your feet so that it does not move.
Then, take a sharp rock or a knife and make a small hole in the center of the hearth. This hole is called a notch.
After you made the notch, you put the spindle in the notch and roll it between your palms. This will cause the spindle to spin.
But the spindle spinning alone will not create a fire. You need to put something like wood dust or dry grass on the hearth to catch fire with the spindle.
That's where the bow comes in. You take the bow and wrap it around the spindle to keep it spinning faster and stronger. After many attempts of rolling the spindle, the wood dust or dry grass can create smoke and then a little ember.
You can blow that ember to get it bigger and then use it to start a fire!
And that's how a bow drill works, it uses basic tools and physics to create heat and sparks to start a fire.
