People are given jobs, called 'Alpha' that makes them more successful, but also makes them less creative and free-thinking. Most people are kept in check by taking a drug called 'soma' which makes them forget their troubles and keeps them happy. By controlling the population in this way, the government is able to keep the peace and ensure people are doing the jobs that the society needs.
