Brevetoxin is a type of poison made by tiny creatures called Karenia brevis, also known as red tide. These creatures live in the ocean and can sometimes grow in large numbers, creating what is called an algal bloom. This bloom can make the ocean water look red or brown, and it can make the water poisonous for animals that live in it.
If animals such as fish, shellfish, or other creatures eat or breathe in the water, they can become sick or even die. Humans can also become sick if they eat poisoned seafood, swim in the poisoned water, or breathe in air that has been contaminated by the toxic algae.
Brevetoxin can cause all sorts of nasty symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing, scratchy throat, and watery eyes. It can also make people feel dizzy and nauseous, which means they might feel like they want to throw up. So it is very important to stay away from areas affected by red tide and not consume any seafood that might have been contaminated!
