Briggs Initiative

The Briggs Initiative was a law proposed in the state of California a long time ago. It said that if you were gay or lesbian, you could not be a teacher in California's public schools.

Imagine if your teacher was a really good person who taught you lots of cool things, but then they lost their job just because they were different. It would be really unfair!

Luckily, lots of people didn't like the Briggs Initiative, and they worked together to stop it from becoming a law. They said that everyone should be treated the same, no matter who they love or how they identify. In the end, the Briggs Initiative was not approved, which means that now, all people can be teachers in California, no matter their gender or sexual orientation.
