ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

British literature

British literature is a type of writing that comes from the country of England. It is stories, poems, plays, and other things that were written by people who lived in England a long time ago. They wrote about things that happened in England, about people who lived there, and about their own thoughts and feelings.

Some famous British writers you may have heard of are William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, J.K. Rowling, and J.R.R. Tolkien. They wrote things like Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice, Oliver Twist, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings.

The stories they wrote can be funny, sad, scary, or exciting. They can teach us things about life and about the world around us. Even though the people who wrote these stories are long gone, we can still read their words and enjoy them today.
