History of the Scots language

The Scots language is a way of talking that's spoken by people in Scotland. It's a special and unique kind of way of talking that's been around for a long, long time.

Many, many years ago, people in Scotland spoke a language that was called Old Scots. This was the only way that people spoke because they didn't really have any other languages to learn from. Over time, the language started to change a bit, and new words and expressions were added into it that made it sound different from what it used to be.

In the 1400s, people started to write things down in this way of talking, and they were often poems or stories called ballads. These were really important to people because they shared stories about Scotland and the people who lived there.

By the 1600s, the Scots language had developed into its own special way of speaking, with its own unique words and rules for speaking it. This was a really special thing for people in Scotland because they had their very own way of talking that was unlike anyone else's.

BUT, as time went on, a lot of people in Scotland started to learn and speak other languages. English, in particular, became really popular and started to become the main way that people talked. This meant that the Scots language wasn't used as much anymore, and a lot of people forgot about it.

However, in recent years, there has been a big push to remember and celebrate the Scots language. It's seen as a really important part of Scottish culture, and people are now teaching it to their children and using it in everyday conversation more often. So even though the Scots language has had a bit of a bumpy history, it's still a really important part of Scotland's heritage and culture.
