ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

British thermal unit

A British Thermal Unit, or BTU for short, is a way to measure how much heat something can produce or how much heat something needs to be heated up or cooled down. Kind of like how you use a ruler to measure how long something is, we use BTUs to measure how hot or cold something is or needs to be.

For example, if you turn on your stove burner, it will produce a certain amount of heat measured in BTUs. And if you have an air conditioner, it will need to remove a certain amount of heat from a room measured in BTUs.

Think of it like a game where you have to fill up a cup with water. The cup can only hold a certain amount of water, just like a room can only hold a certain amount of heat. And just like you need a certain amount of water to fill up a cup, you need a certain amount of BTUs to heat up or cool down a room.

So next time you feel warm or chilly, just remember that there are little BTUs working behind the scenes to keep you feeling comfortable!
