Buddhist monasticism is a way of life devoted to living according to the teachings of the Buddha. Monks and nuns who choose to follow this way of life live in monasteries, or special places of worship, and practice a number of different activities. These activities include praying, meditating, studying, giving teachings, and helping people in need. Monks and nuns also follow certain rules, such as not eating after noon, and not keeping any possessions. By following these rules, monks and nuns hope to closer to achieving enlightenment, and helping others do the same.
