Monasticism

Monasticism is a special way of life that some people choose to live. People who follow monasticism are called monks or nuns. Monks and nuns live apart from their family and community and dedicate their lives to prayer, service and living in harmony with nature. Monks and nuns often live in groups in religious buildings called monasteries or convents. They pray, meditate and study spiritual teachings to try to gain inner peace and understanding. Monks and nuns wear simple clothes and follow a strict daily routine. Monasticism comes from the Greek word meaning "single life".
