Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a hill that looks like a big flat top? That hill is called a butte. It's like someone took a big scoop of dirt and plopped it down on the ground, except it's a lot bigger than any scoop you could make.
Buttes are usually found in dry areas like deserts, because it takes a long time for water and wind to wear away the sides of the hill until it's just a flat top left. It's kind of like a sandcastle you build on the beach - as the waves come in and out, they slowly wear away the edges until it's just a lump of sand left.
Some people like to climb buttes, because they can get a really good view from the top. But be careful - it can be pretty steep and slippery.
