A monadnock is like a big mountain that sticks out of the ground all by itself. Imagine you're playing with a sandcastle at the beach and you make one big pile of sand that's taller than all the other ones around it. That big pile of sand is like a monadnock! But instead of sand, it's made out of rocks that are really old.
These rocks get pushed up and up over millions of years until they stick out of the ground. Sometimes they're all alone, and sometimes there are other monadnocks nearby. They're usually really tall and steep, so it can be really hard to climb up them. But when you get to the top, you can see really far all around you!
People love to visit monadnocks and hike up them to see the pretty views. And scientists love studying them because they can help us learn about how the earth used to look a long, long time ago.
