ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Byzantine bureaucracy and aristocracy

The Byzantine Empire was like a big group of people living in a fancy palace. Some of these people were in charge and others were not.

The people in charge were called aristocrats. They were very special because their families had been important for a very long time. They wore fancy clothes and had lots of money. They got to make important decisions for everyone else in the palace.

But sometimes, the aristocrats didn't agree with each other. They would argue and fight and not be able to make decisions together. This was a big problem!

To help fix this problem, the Byzantine Empire had something called a bureaucracy. This was like a big group of people who helped the aristocrats make decisions. They were like secretaries, or people who help their bosses get organized.

The bureaucrats had to be very smart and know a lot about many different things. They wrote things down, made sure everyone was doing what they were supposed to, and helped the aristocrats talk to each other.

Together, the aristocrats and the bureaucrats made sure that the Byzantine Empire was run well and everyone was happy!
