Byzantinism is an old way of ruling that came from the Eastern Roman Empire, sometimes called the Byzantine Empire. It was based on the Roman government, but changed and developed in ways that made it unique. An important part of the byzantine system was the idea of keeping a large bureaucracy full of people who had special jobs and skills that kept the Empire running. This bureaucracy was like a big machine that made sure people followed the laws, taxes were collected and people were treated fairly. The Emperor was in charge of the whole system and was seen as the most important person in the Empire. The byzantine system was important in keeping order and helping to keep the Empire together for many centuries.
