ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

California Proposition 37 (2012)

Let's say you are at the grocery store with your parents and you see some yummy-looking strawberries. You might ask your parents if you can buy them, but first, you want to know if they are safe to eat. This is why we have food labels - so we can see what ingredients are in our food and if there are any things we might be allergic to.

California Proposition 37 was about making sure that all foods sold in California were labeled with information on whether or not they had been genetically modified (sometimes called "GMOs"). This means that farmers or companies change the DNA of the plants or animals they grow in order to make them better in some way, like being more resistant to pests or growing faster.

Some people think that GMOs are safe and helpful, while others believe they might be harmful, and want to know if they are in their food. The people who supported Prop 37 wanted everyone to know if their food had been genetically modified so they could decide whether they wanted to eat it or not.

However, the people who opposed Prop 37 thought it would be too expensive and difficult for farmers and grocery stores to make sure all their labels were correct. There were also concerns that it could cause confusion and unnecessary alarm, since many experts have said that GMOs are safe to eat.

In the end, enough people voted against Prop 37, so it did not pass. This means that food in California does not have to be labeled with information on whether or not it contains GMOs. It's still important to read food labels, though, so you know what you're eating and can make healthy choices!
