ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Canadian Afghan detainee abuse scandal

So, imagine if you and your friend were playing together and your friend did something that wasn't very nice to you, like taking away your toys or pushing you down. Now, let's pretend that some grown-ups were in charge of keeping an eye on your friend, but they didn't stop your friend from being mean to you. That's kind of like what happened in the Canadian Afghan Detainee Abuse Scandal.

In 2001, the Canadian government sent soldiers to Afghanistan to help fight against a group of bad guys called the Taliban. Some of these bad guys were captured and put in jail. But, many of these bad guys were really mean and they didn't want to stay in jail, so they tried to escape. To make sure that these bad guys didn't escape, the Canadian soldiers handed them over to the Afghan soldiers to take care of them.

Now, this is where things got really bad. Some of the Afghan soldiers were really, really mean to these bad guys. They hurt them and made them say things that they didn't mean to say. The Canadian soldiers knew that this was happening, but they didn't do anything to stop it.

The Canadian government was really upset when they found out what was happening. They should have made sure that no one was getting hurt, even if they were bad guys. So, they tried to investigate what was happening and make sure that it never happened again.

It's important to remember that, no matter what someone has done wrong, they still deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. The Canadian Afghan Detainee Abuse Scandal was a really sad time, but it's important to learn from it and make sure that no one is ever hurt again.
