ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cardinal utility

Hello, little one!

Cardinal utility is all about measuring how much you like something. You know when you eat your favorite candy and it makes you happy? That's because you get some "utility" or happiness from it.

Now, let's say you have two candies to choose from - one is your favorite candy and the other is something you don't like as much. Cardinal utility lets us measure how much you like each candy by giving them a number. We can say that you like your favorite candy a lot and give it a high number, and the other candy might get a lower number because you don't like it as much.

We can use these numbers to make choices. If you have a limited amount of money to buy candy, you might decide to use it all on your favorite candy because it gives you more happiness than the other candy with the lower utility number.

So, cardinal utility is just a way to measure how much we like things so we can make better choices about what we want to do or buy.

Hope this helps, little one!
