ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Carpetbagger

Okay, imagine you and your family live in a big, cozy house. You have everything you need, like toys, food, and clothes. But one day, a stranger comes to your house and says they want to live with you. This stranger doesn't have any toys or food with them, and they don't know anything about your house or your family. This stranger is a carpetbagger.

In real life, a carpetbagger is a person who travels to a new place where they don't belong and try to make money or gain power. In the past, after the American Civil War, some people from the North went to the South to take advantage of the situation. These carpetbaggers wanted to control the southern states and get rich. They didn't care about the southern people or their way of life. They just wanted to use them for their own interests.

So, imagine the carpetbagger in your house starts telling you what to do, even though they don't know anything about you or your family. They might take your toys and say they belong to them now. Or they might make you work for them and take your food. That's how the southern people felt when the carpetbaggers came. They felt like someone was trying to take over their homes and their lives without respect for their culture or their feelings.

That's why people use the term carpetbagger to describe someone who goes to a new place to take advantage of the situation. It's not fair or respectful, and it can cause a lot of problems.
