ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cast recording

Okay kiddo, do you remember when we watched that play or musical last week and we really enjoyed the songs and the music that the performers sang and played on stage? Well, sometimes people want to listen to those songs outside of the show, like in their car or when they’re cleaning or just when they want to relax.

That’s where the cast recording comes in! It’s like a special CD or digital album that has all of the songs and music from the show, but it’s recorded separately in a studio without the costumes or the scenery or the audience noises.

The performers who sang and played in the show go into a special recording room after the show is over and they sing and play all the songs again, but this time they’re trying extra hard to be perfect since it’s going to be heard by a lot of people who couldn’t see the show live.

Once they’re finished, the recording is mixed and edited so that it sounds really good, and then it gets sent out to lots of stores and websites so people can buy it and listen to it whenever they want.

So if you ever really like the music in a play or musical, you can get the cast recording and listen to it again and again, even if you can’t see the show live anymore!
