ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cell fate determination

Okay kiddo, so you know how our body is made up of lots of tiny building blocks called cells, right? Well, every cell in our body has a specific job to do, like being a part of your skin or your liver.

Now, we call the process of a cell deciding what job it’s going to have “cell fate determination”. It’s like a very important job interview for a cell.

There are lots of different things that can happen during cell fate determination that can affect what job the cell gets. Some of these things can be influenced by our genes or the environment around the cell.

Think of it like a game of chance. When the cell is forming, there are different factors that come into play that determine what a cell will become. It’s almost like rolling a dice or spinning a wheel - you never know what you’re going to get!

Once a cell’s fate is determined, it’s committed to that job for the rest of its life. Some cells might divide and make more cells of the same type, like skin cells. Other cells will stay the same and just do their job, like nerve cells in our brain.

So just like how we have different jobs in our community, every cell in our body has a unique job to do, determined through the process of cell fate determination.
