ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chad (paper)

Chad is tiny pieces of paper that are left over when you punch holes in paper with a hole puncher. It's like when you use a hole puncher to make holes in a piece of paper and small bits of paper fall out. Those bits are called chad. People use hole punchers for many things, like making holes in documents so they can be put in a binder or making confetti for party decorations. Sometimes, people talk about chad when it comes to voting. When people vote, they sometimes use a special type of paper and a machine that punches a hole in the paper to indicate who they want to vote for. After many people vote, there can be a lot of chad left over. This happened during a big election in the United States many years ago and it caused a lot of confusion and disagreement over who should have won. So, even though chad might seem like just a bunch of small paper scraps, it can be a really big deal in some situations!
