Charles Lloyd Tuckey

Charles Lloyd Tuckey was an English explorer and soldier in the late 1700s. He was born in England in 1758 and went to sea as a young man. In 1781, he joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman and sailed to the Caribbean and the South Pacific. He rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy and eventually became a captain.

In 1805, Charles Lloyd Tuckey was part of an expedition to explore the Congo River in Central Africa. He and his crew became the first Europeans to sail up the Congo from the Atlantic Ocean and see the mighty river's source. They traveled for over 900 miles and eventually reached the beginning of the river, the Lake Boyoma. Mr. Tuckey's explorations helped to open up the Congo to trade and to create maps of the area.

Charles Lloyd Tuckey's exploits and courage earned him a lasting place in history. He died in 1816, but his story lives on today as a record of his bravery and exploration.
