ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chattering teeth

Have you ever noticed that when you feel too cold, your teeth start chattering? This happens because your body wants to keep you warm, and your teeth are basically clapping together to create heat.

Inside your body, there are many cells that work together to keep your body at the right temperature. They're called thermoreceptors, and they're like tiny sensors. When they sense that your body is getting too cold, they send a message to your brain to turn up the heat.

But sometimes, when your body is too cold, the thermoreceptors can't keep up. That's when your teeth start chattering. Your muscles are trying to create heat by moving back and forth, but it doesn't really work because it's just your teeth doing the moving.

So, when your teeth start chattering, it's like your body's way of saying "I'm cold!" and trying to warm itself up. But it's important to bundle up and stay warm when you feel chilly, so your teeth don't have to do all the work!
