ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chavacano

Okay, imagine you go to a place called Zamboanga in the Philippines. There, you will hear people speaking a special kind of language called Chavacano. Chavacano is special because it is like a mix of two languages – Spanish and a local language called Bisaya.

So, let's say your mom speaks Spanish and your dad speaks Bisaya. You might hear them talk to each other and mix up their words. That is kind of like how Chavacano was created. People from different places in the Philippines, like Spanish colonizers and Bisaya-speaking locals, made a new language by mixing their words together.

Chavacano has words that come from Spanish, like "casa" (which means "house"), and words that come from Bisaya, like "bira" (which means "drink"). People who speak Chavacano might say things like "Mi casa tiene bira" which means "My house has drinks" in English.

Even though Chavacano sounds like a mix of two languages, it is its own special language with its own rules and grammar. And if you go to Zamboanga, you might be able to hear people speaking it!
