ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chelonoidis nigra abingdonii

Chelonoidis nigra abingdonii is a fancy name for a type of giant tortoise that used to live on an island called Pinta. Giant tortoises are super big and move around really slowly. They have a hard shell that protects them like a house.

This particular type of tortoise was the only kind on the Pinta island, meaning it was really special and unique. Unfortunately, there were not very many of them left in the world, and nobody knows exactly why.

In fact, there was only one of these tortoises left that we know of, and his name was Lonesome George. George lived on Pinta and didn't have any friends or family like other tortoises. He was the last one!

People tried really hard to get other tortoises to mate with George and make more of his kind, but it never worked. Eventually, George died and now his species is extinct, which means there are no more of them left. This is why it was so important to try to save Lonesome George and his special kind of tortoise.
