ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chinese as a foreign language

Hey there kiddo, Chinese is a language that is spoken by lots of people in China and other countries. It can be quite different from the language that we speak in English. When someone wants to learn Chinese as a foreign language, it means they are not from China and are trying to learn to speak Chinese just like they would learn to speak English or any other language.

Learning Chinese can be very fun, but also a little difficult at first. For example, instead of using letters like we do in English, Chinese uses characters with little pictures on them. These characters are called "hanzi" and there are thousands of them, so it might take a while to learn how to read and write them.

In Chinese, the way you say words can also be different from English. For example, the word "hello" in Chinese is "nǐ hǎo". Instead of one simple word, there are two different sounds you have to make to say hello.

But don't worry, with lots of practice and time, anyone can learn to speak Chinese as a foreign language! Whether it's for fun, travel or work, it can be a really cool skill to have and can help you connect with people from different cultures and parts of the world.
