ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chinese censorship abroad

Have you ever played a game called "Simon says"? In this game, Simon is the boss who tells people what to do, and if they don't listen, they lose. Now imagine if Simon was a super big boss and everyone in the world had to listen to him.

Well, in China, there is something like Simon, but it's not a game. The Chinese government, which is like the big boss, tells people what they can and cannot say or see online. If people disobey, they can get in trouble, just like losing in the game.

Sometimes, the Chinese government wants to make sure that people outside of China don't see certain things too. They don't want them to know about some of the things that they're doing in their country, like protests or problems they're having. So, they use something called "censorship" to block those things from being seen outside of China. It's like putting up a big wall so people can't see what's on the other side.

China also wants to control what people say outside of their country. They might make a movie or a TV show that they want to share with people from other countries. But if there is something in the show that Simon... I mean the Chinese government doesn't like, they will make sure it gets taken out. It's like editing a video to remove a part you don't like.

This can affect people in different countries because they might not be able to see or say everything they want to on the internet because of China's censorship. So, it's important for everyone to be aware of what's going on and to make sure we have freedom of speech and the right to access information.
