A Chinese era name is a name that is given to a period of time based on the ruling dynasty in China. The Chinese have been using this naming system for thousands of years. For example, if the Tang dynasty is ruling China, that period of time might be called the Tang dynasty era. The era name will change when a new dynasty takes over.
