ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chinese honorifics

Okay, so in China, it's very important to show respect to people who are older or have a higher status than you. One way to do that is by using special words called "honorifics." These words make the other person feel important and show them that you respect them.

For example, if you meet someone who is much older than you, you might call them "lao" before their name. So, if their name is Zhang, you would say "lao Zhang" to show that you respect them and their age.

There are also honorifics you can use for people with important jobs, like teachers or doctors. For teachers, you might use the word "shi" before their name. So, if their name is Wang, you would say "Wang shi" to show that you respect them and their job.

It's important to know the right honorifics to use in different situations, or you might accidentally be disrespectful to someone. But by using honorifics, you can show respect to others and make them feel valued.
