ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chroma subsampling

Let's pretend we have a picture of a rainbow with all the colors- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. When we want to save or share this picture, it can be very big and take up a lot of space, so we need to make it smaller.

Chroma subsampling is a way to make the picture smaller by keeping some colors and not others. It's kinda like when you only want to have some candy from a big jar and not all of them.

So instead of keeping all the colors, we might decide to only keep the red and green colors, but not the blue color. This is called 4:2:0 chroma subsampling because there are four red and green colors compared to only two blue colors.

By doing this, the picture becomes smaller and takes up less space. However, sometimes the picture doesn't look as good because some colors are missing.

Overall, chroma subsampling is a way to make a picture smaller but may affect the quality of the image.
