ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cone cell

A cone cell is a special kind of eye cell that helps you see colors. You know how you can look at a rainbow and see all the different colors in it? That's because of your cone cells!

Think of cone cells like special little helpers in your eye. They work with other eye cells to send signals to your brain about the colors you are seeing. When light comes into your eye, the cone cells send signals to your brain to tell it what colors are in that light.

Just like how you might have different colored markers or crayons, your cone cells also come in different colors. Some cone cells are better at seeing red, others are better at seeing green, and others are better at seeing blue.

So the next time you see a rainbow or colorful picture, you can thank your cone cells for helping you see all those colors!
