ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Civis romanus sum

"Civis Romanus Sum" is a fancy way of saying "I am a Roman citizen." It means that you belong to a group of people who are from Rome.

In ancient times, being a Roman citizen was a big deal. It meant that you had certain rights and protections that other people didn't have. For example, if you were accused of a crime, you could go to trial and defend yourself instead of just being punished right away.

People who were not Roman citizens were often treated unfairly and didn't have as many rights. But if you were a citizen, you could proudly say "Civis Romanus Sum" and know that you were part of an important group of people.
