ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cleavage (politics)

Okay kiddo, so imagine you have a toy and you want to share it with your friends. Some of your friends might want the whole toy for themselves, while others might be okay with just a part of it.

Now let's say we apply this idea to politics. In politics, different groups of people have different ideas about how things should be done. Some people might want the government to have a lot of power and control, while others might want the opposite and think people should have more individual freedom.

When it comes to cleavage in politics, it means that there is a big difference or divide between these different groups or opinions. For example, let's say there's a big debate about healthcare in the United States. One group might want the government to provide healthcare for everyone, while another group might think that people should be responsible for their own healthcare and not rely on the government.

So, there is a cleavage or divide between these two groups because they have very different ideas about healthcare. This divide is often seen in elections where people vote for politicians who have similar beliefs and values about these issues.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
