ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Clipping (morphology)

Clipping (morphology) is when a longer word is made into a shorter word by cutting some parts off! For example, the word "friendship" can be clipped into the word "friend". Sometimes, clipping can make a new word that means something different, like the word "ad" (from "advertisement"). Clipping words can help us talk faster, and it can even make new words that people use in everyday language.
