Clockwork is like a big toy that shows you what time it is. It's made up of lots of little parts and gears that work together to make the clock tick-tock. There is one big wheel that turns really slowly, and smaller gears that turn faster. These gears all work together to move the hands on the clock face.
Just like how you wind up a toy car to make it go, you need to wind up the clock with a special key to make it work. When you wind it up, it gives the clock energy to make all the gears move and show you what time it is.
These clocks used to be used everywhere, like in people's homes and even on big buildings like churches. And even though they're not used as much anymore, they're still really cool to look at and watch tick-tock!
