Okay kiddo, do you know what a barrier beach is? It’s a long and narrow piece of land that sits between the ocean and a bay or a lagoon. People love going to these beaches because they are usually calm and peaceful.
But, these barrier beaches are also pretty important for protecting the areas behind them from storms and strong waves that might come in from the ocean.
Now, the Coastal Barrier Resources Act is a law made by the government that helps protect these barrier beaches from being developed or destroyed. This law makes it harder for people to build houses or other buildings on these beaches and also limits the amount of government money that can be used for things like roads or utilities in these areas.
So, why is this law so important? Well, it’s because these barrier beaches are home to lots of plants and animals that need them to survive. In fact, some animals like sea turtles even lay their eggs on these beaches!
By protecting these areas, the government is helping to make sure that these animals and plants can continue to thrive, while also making sure that people who live or vacation near these areas are safe from storms and other natural disasters.
