Color–color diagram

A color-color diagram is like a picture that helps people see the different colors of stars. We can't always see stars with our eyes because they're far away and sometimes they're too dim to see. But we can use telescopes to see them, and sometimes we look at stars with special filters that make it easier to see their colors.

The color of a star is important because it tells us things about the star, like how hot it is or how old it is. When we look at a star through a filter, we can see what colors it's emitting. We do this for two different filters and plot them on the color-color diagram. This helps us identify what type of star it is.

The diagram has two axes, one horizontal and one vertical. These axes measure two different colors of the star. For example, one axis may measure blue color and the other axis measures red color. We plot the color of the star on each axis and connect them with a dot. Each dot represents a star.

Different types of stars will show up in different places on the diagram. For example, young hot stars will show up in one corner of the diagram, while older cooler stars will show up in a different corner. By looking at where the stars are on the diagram, we can learn a lot about them. Scientists love using color-color diagrams because they can tell us so much about the stars we're looking at!
