Comammox

Okay kiddo, let me tell you about comammox!

You know how fish pee in the water they swim in? It's like that, but with tiny organisms called bacteria. These bacteria help break down the pee and other waste in the water so it doesn't become a problem.

Well, one of these bacteria is called Nitrospira. It's really good at eating one kind of pee (ammonia), but it was thought it needed a buddy bacteria to eat a different kind of pee (nitrite).

But scientists recently discovered a new type of Nitrospira bacteria that can eat both kinds of pee all by itself! They called it comammox, which is short for "complete ammonia oxidation."

So now we know that these comammox bacteria are really good at cleaning up the waste in the water. Isn't that cool?
