ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Complex algebraic variety

Imagine you have a giant coloring book full of shapes like squares, circles, and triangles. Each shape is a different color, and you can even color some of them using different shades of the same color.

Now, imagine you have a super special kind of shape called a complex algebraic variety. But, it's not just one shape - it's actually made up of lots and lots of shapes all mashed together in a really complicated way.

To understand complex algebraic varieties, you need to know a few things about numbers. There are regular numbers, like 1, 2, 3, and so on. But there are also what are called complex numbers. These are numbers that have two parts - the real part (like 1 or 2) and the imaginary part (like 3i or 4i). Don't worry too much about what that means for now - just know that these are kinds of numbers that are really important when it comes to complex algebraic varieties.

Back to our coloring book of shapes. Complex algebraic varieties are really, really complicated shapes that can be made up of all sorts of different kinds of shapes. They're sort of like puzzles made out of shapes.

But there's a catch. You can't just color them however you want. There are certain rules you have to follow. These rules tell you how many colors to use and how you're allowed to combine them.

So, when we talk about complex algebraic varieties, we're really talking about these super complicated shapes that are made up of lots of simpler shapes, and that follow certain rules about how they can be colored. It's like if you had a coloring book full of puzzles, and each puzzle had its own set of rules about how you had to color it.
