ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Concurrent jurisdiction

Concurrent jurisdiction means that two or more people or groups have the power to handle the same issue or problem at the same time. It's like when two kids both want to play with the same toy – they both have the right to play with it, and nobody can take it away from them.

In the legal world, concurrent jurisdiction means that more than one court has the authority to make a decision on the same case. For example, if a crime is committed on federal land, both federal and state courts can prosecute the person who committed the crime. This can sometimes cause confusion because different courts may have different laws or rules they follow.

In simpler terms, concurrent jurisdiction means that multiple people or groups have the ability to work on the same thing at the same time. In a legal sense, this means that more than one court can make a decision about the same issue or problem. It's like having two people share custody of a pet or toy. They both have the same rights to it and can use it whenever they want.
