ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Constructible number

A constructible number is like a special type of number that can be built using only a ruler and a compass. You know, like when you draw circles or lines in your notebook with those tools!

Imagine you want to build a house on a piece of land. First, you would need to measure the size of the land using your ruler. Then, you would use your compass to mark the corners of the house and draw the shapes of the rooms.

In math, a constructible number is made by using your ruler and compass to measure and draw lines and curves. But there are some rules! For example, you can only use your tools to create lines and circles that intersect at points. These points are called intersections.

With these rules, you can construct a lot of different shapes and patterns. And some of these patterns lead to special numbers called constructible numbers. These numbers can be made by starting with the number 1, and then adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and taking square roots using only ruler and compass constructions.

But not all numbers can be made using ruler and compass constructions! Some numbers, like pi, are very tricky and cannot be made this way. But don't worry, there are still lots of other ways to work with them.
