ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Coordinate surfaces

Imagine you are standing in a big empty room. The room has walls, a floor, and a ceiling. Now, imagine that you have a special ability to place imaginary lines all around you. These lines can go up and down, side to side, or forward and backward.

These lines are called coordinates. You can think of them like a map. Just like how a map helps you find your way around a city, coordinates help you find your way around a room.

When you put these coordinates together, they make what we call 'coordinate surfaces.' It's like putting together puzzle pieces. Each puzzle piece is a coordinate and when you put them together, you create a bigger picture.

For example, if you draw an imaginary line that goes straight up and down (like a pole) and another imaginary line that goes straight from side to side, where they meet creates a flat surface. This surface is called a coordinate surface.

Now, let's say you draw another imaginary line that goes straight from front to back and it meets the other two lines. That creates a different coordinate surface. And if you keep adding more and more lines, you can create even more coordinate surfaces!

These coordinate surfaces are really helpful when we want to describe something in the room. We can use them to point to places in the room and describe exactly where they are. So, next time you're in a big empty room, try to imagine drawing your own coordinates and creating your own coordinate surfaces!
